"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine:"   (Prov. 17:22)

Sometime during the 1st century the early Christians in the Rome catacombs began using the symbol of the fish. The earliest reference to this symbol was in Paedogogus, III, xi by Clement of Alexandria. It was used by the early persecuted Christians as a secret password and/or symbol to identify themselves as believers in Jesus. The first Believers did not dare to wear any mark of their faith. If they did so, they were often persecuted or killed.

"Ichthus" (pronounce IK-THUS) is the English transliteration of, the Greek word for "fish". The Greek letters form an acrostic for "Jesus, Christ, God's, Son, Savior". The two archs, which make up the "fish", were used in early Christianity as a sign that one was among brothers. One arch would be made in the dirt by one person, and the other person would complete the drawing of the sign of the fish with another arch. The early Christians sketched the sign of a fish as a sign to others that they were a Christian.

The Greek initials of "Jesus, Christ, God's, Son, Saviour," made up the Greek word for "Fish". Today the fish stills stands as a symbol of a Christian. The use of the fish symbol is still used by Christians today. Carry yours as a symbol to all that you are a Christian and that Jesus Christ, God's Son, is your Saviour.
